I had a seriously productive week. Well, I had a seriously productive Monday and Tuesday… which meant that the rest of the week was spent lounging (don’t judge – I was reading and stuff!). And in that spirit – I’m giving you an on-time, best of the week post. Stoked? Good.
Senegal Banned From Nations Cup After Riot – BBC. First of all, I think that it’s amazing that there is actually a rule regarding what happens if the fans riot. That’s preparation, right there. Although it’s disappointing for Senegal that they’ll be out of the competition, it does say something about people’s passion for sport. It’s practically unparalleled.
Beyonce to Headline 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show – Lance Madden, Forbes SportsMoney. I know this isn’t exactly about the sports “business” but seriously? It’s a great business decision. I have a friend (hi Pimpkin!) who will probably watch the Superbowl just because she’s performing. It’s amazing marketing and doesn’t have the fans up in arms about catering to just one group of viewers (like that Paul McCartney mess).
New Rules Revealed – AFL. Ahhhhhhh. Changes to the game! LOVE IT. I will have to do a post on why AFL is the smartest league, ever, due to their changes. They didn’t change the interchange rule, which most people thought they should, which has upset lots of players. But they can’t take it away yet – it’s doing what it’s supposed to do and they haven’t given it a fair go.
NBA Season 2012/13: In the midst of another golden era – Ryan O’Connell, The Roar. Who doesn’t miss the Bird/Johnson/Jordan era? I do, that’s for sure. And while I’m not sure that this has the makings of a new one, it’s a novel idea. As much as I dislike LeBron James (I want to say ‘hate’ but I reserve that emotion for Kobe Bryant) I have to admit… the man impacts the game.
Stadium Innovation – Chris Mallen, Gloves Off Sports. I’ve always wondered why sports leagues didn’t get technology involved more with their fans, since it seems like and “easy” way to connect and enhance the game day experience. The NBA is starting to develop these things (ordering my food with my phone and being notified when it’s ready?! Witchcraft!) and I seriously cannot wait until my next NBA game. Other leagues need to get on board… FAST. (I could help you with that – shameless self-promotion)
What were your favourite stories this week? Anything mind-boggling that I missed? Oh, and just so you know, I left out the Red Bull skydive because… well… frankly, I didn’t like any of the articles written about it. Is that terrible?
