Ricky Ponting has announced his retirement and has just finished his last test match, against South Africa (we won’t get too much into it – they lost, it wasn’t pretty). After 168 matches over 20 years, most agree it’s time.
It’s sad in more than one way. He’s starting to show his age and has been on the decline for about 4 years now, so it’s a good idea for him to get out before he completely falls apart (Brett Farve, anyone?). He knows he’s not as great as he once was. While playing as long as he has is a tremendous accomplishment, the long you play, the more people start to talk about retirement. People have been talking about it since 2008… and they’re finally getting their wish. Ah, isn’t that bittersweet?
