Here’s something that is not so secret: I LOVE NEW YEARS. The parties, the champagne, the resolutions, the diaries… oh, the diaries. I don’t think that I can ever make anyone fully comprehend the joy that I get from filling out a new calendar. I get goosebumps when I think about it. It’s my version of heaven, to be honest. And one of the best things about the new year (other than the fact that it means the NBA All-Star Weekend and the NAB Cup are only 2 months away – they start the same day) is that it gives you the opportunity to look back and see what you’ve done in the past 12 months and enjoy the highlights. Which is why you’re here – recount the sports highlights of 2012. Shall we?
Best Sports Scandal
Jerry Sandusky and Penn State
I hesitate to call it the “best” especially because there are children involved but it was certainly the most controversial. It’s still going on, for goodness sake. I wonder if the sanctions imposed by the NCAA will be enough to make an example out of them.
Best Actualization of Viral Video
Rhyce Shaw Nek Minnit
Seriously genius. You see, Rhyce Shaw lost the premiership with Collingwood in 2002 and 2003 and left the club before their premiership win in 2010. One minute, losing grand finals… NEK MINIT premiership winner.
Best Finals Game
AFL Grand Final – Hawthorn Hawks v Sydney Swans
Come. On. Was I really going to give it to anyone else? Not only was it the best defensive team against the best offensive team, with just the right amount of lead changes and suspense, but MY TEAM WON. And it lead to the Nek Minit video. Need I say more? (Runner up is the Super Bowl – NY Giants v New England Patriots. Good game, boys.)
Best Guy To Leave Your Boyfriend For
I’m not just saying this because I love Sebastian… I’m saying it because it’s true. He won the F1 championship this year for the third time in a row. He’s also adorable and funny. If you’re gonna leave your man, Sebastian is a good option.
Best Girl To Leave Your Missus For
This pick courtesy of the boyfriend who watched her bouncy pre-race video (approximately) one million times the day he discovered it. The way he and the boys put it, you can only do stuff like that if you’re mad, and the way she smokes everyone in the race is proof of her mad-ness.
Best ‘I-Feel-Inadequate’ Moment
Michael Clarke scores career high of 329
And he could have done even better. He just stopped out of respect for Sir Donald Bradman. Good man, that Michael Clarke.
Best Reason To Drink Yourself into a Stupor
Green Bay v Seattle Ref Fiasco
While I may not be a die hard NFL fan (What can I say? They’re not aired in Australia very often…) my mother’s family is from Wisconsin and this was NOT a happy time. The ref strike was a hot mess, to say the least. (Runner up: the NHL strike – in my humble opinion, one of the most damaging things that has ever happened in sport.)
Best Use Of Slow Motion
Manny Pacquiao Gets Knocked Out
This depresses me since Manny is pretty much a Filipino national hero (my dad is from the Philippines) and Hawaii loves him (as we have discussed, I am from Hawaii). But if there was a video from 2012 to watch in slo-mo, this is it.
Best Person To Make You Lose Faith In Humanity
Was I the only person who was surprised when Lance’s doping scandal came out? It’s as if everything I believed for years suddenly fell apart… and I don’t even like cycling. And I can’t believe he’s essentially built an empire (which is not suffering!) on a lie. Anarchy.
Best Excuse To Refuse To Pay Taxes
The Australian Olympic Swim Team
While I still think that silvers and bronzes are wonderful, it must be acknowledged that it was a huge waste of tax payers money. Of course, now that it’s over, no one will think about it until the next Olympics but it could be a legit excuse if you don’t want to pay your government taxes. What do you think?
Best Event To Tell Your Kids About… Over & Over
Man City Beats Man U, after Man U win
That was a tricky thing to write… but you know what I mean. Man U thought they won, except that Man City won their game which made them the actual EPL premiers. Total ridiculousness.

SUANFC: Winners and Brothers
The most popular post this year, by a landslide, was a community post about the boys who have a special place in my heart: the Sydney Uni AFL team. It got the most views, most comments and inspired the most people to email me. Check it out here.

Aussie Sports & Cotton On: A Perfect Match
While I am happy with the research I’ve been doing… my favourite post is about my favourite idea. Which was a partnership idea between Aussie sports leagues and CottonOn.
Best Sporting Moment
Felix Baumgartner Red Bull Stratos Jump
Well, I mean… did you really think it was going to be anything else?
