We all know that the Sydney Swans are my second favourite AFL team (GWS is my favourite – I’m a big fan of the underdog) and this weekend… they showed everyone just how great they are. Now the papers and blogs and Twittersphere are all buzzing about what’s happened this weekend and they probably know more detail than I do, but as this is the SYDNEY sports blog… here is my ode to the Swans and all the reasons they are awesome.
1) They didn’t complain about the bus. When their bus broke down on the way to the game (seriously, AFL? What kind of Mickey Mouse operation are you running?) they may have been irritated… but they sucked it up and called some taxis and got on trams. Can you imagine Kobe or LeBron on a bus to the Staples Center and American Airlines Arena? No? Me neither. Those guys are divas. Dan Hannebery: Man of the people. While I don’t think that riding the tram to the MCG contributed to their win (that joke was over-told after the first time – let’s just stop with the pseduo-superstitions, shall we?) it was pretty cool that they were so cool about it.
2) They completely dominated Collingwood. Collingwood has been in fine form recently and, if I’m being honest, I had my doubts about the outcome of the game. But lo and behold! Swans on top. By 47 points. That’s no small feat.
3) Adam Goodes is… well. Adam Goodes. Who doesn’t love Adam Goodes? He was the first AFL player I ever knew about (maybe Dane Swan was first, but I’m not positive…) so of course he holds a special place in my heart. But his attitude and reaction towards the entire situation with the Collingwood girl was top notch. While I don’t think that her age is any excuse (I knew what racism was when I was 13 and I knew it was bad) everyone, myself included, admires how he has handled this. Not to mention his on-field dominance. Could he have had a better game? What a beast.
4) Lewis Jetta wears leopard pants. Leopard print = my life. If you didn’t see him on The Footy Show… Youtube it. It made my day.
PS – How good is that photo? New icon? Probably.
