I don’t know if you’ve heard yet (and if you haven’t, you probably should have) but the AFL have done something really cool.
They’ve created a compilation CD of songs team captains listen to before games to get fired up. All proceeds go to Ladder – a charity that helps solve youth homelessness. I thought that this was awesome… until I listened to Triple J.
Now, I ave to assume that the AFL contacted Triple J about it – they’re basically the biggest radio station in Australia and hits their target market (males, aged 18-35 are basically sport team gold). But I’m not sure Triple J did the best with it.
Boyfriend has a love-hate relationship with Triple J – he loves the music, but he thinks that most of the announcers on the shows are full of themselves and think Triple J is the best thing in the world. I never knew what he was talking about… until the segment with the AFL CD. They basically slammed half the songs on the CD – saying the songs were terrible and the guys should be embarrassed.
I won’t lie – I wasn’t happy with some of the songs, personally (Wonderwall? Really Joel? I mean, it’s one of my favourite songs but is it really what you want to listen to before a game? I WANT WAR MUSIC) but to each his own, you know? And considering proceeds are going to charity, don’t you want to encourage people to buy the CD? Isn’t it a bad idea to say bad things about the songs on it?
I also didn’t like that he revealed all the songs and who chose them – I probably would have bought it if I didn’t know in advance and could have guessed who chose what… but that’s just me.
And now, I’m disappointed. I realise the CD came out a few weeks ago and that I should have posted this when I initially heard the Triple J segment… but we can’t all be perfect. And now… I can’t find the CD online. I would love to link you to it… but I can’t. I’ve Googled and checked their website and it’s no where to be found. I have already done more than anyone else would do to buy the CD. C’mon AFL – you can do better than that, can’t you?
(UPDATE: After several minutes of searching – not a lot, but definitely more than other people would do – I found where you can buy it! Click here to check it out)
So overall, I have to say – GREAT idea. I love the idea.
But the execution? Eh. Not so much.
And someone needs to have a talk with Triple J.
