Oh, the new year.
I LOVE the new year. I said the same thing last year. Not only is it a time for new beginnings (and who doesn’t love new beginnings?) but it’s a time for reflection. And, as I did last year, I am going to reflect on the sporting moments that made 2013 notable. Looking back, I see that 2013 wasn’t a great year for sport. At least not in my opinion. There were a few highs… but then there were some very, very low lows. Thank God for new years and new starts, amirite?
Best (Worst?) Sport Story of 2013
The Essendon Drug Scandal
Surprised? This was, easily, the most intense story in Australian sport. And it’s still going (the AFL is paying James Hird while he’s suspended, but more on that later). It shook the Aussie sports world and has tested the AFL in more ways than one. I can’t wait to see how this one ends.
Best Reason to Give Up Sport Forever
Australia’s Disastrous Showing at The Ashes in England
While some of my Australian amigos (yea, I’m looking at you, boyfriend) think that Australia performed admirably, I completely disagree. Honestly, Australia. Be embarrassed.
Best Reason to Get Back on the Sport Train
Australia’s Domination of The Ashes in Australia
But then… AUSTRALIA TURNED IT AROUND. To be fair, there is still one series left so there’s a chance, no matter how slim, that England can come back and win something. But even if they do, this has been Australia’s series. The bowling, the batting, the absurd and random scores… they killed. Be proud, Australia.
Best Guy To Leave Your Hubbie For
Despite some drama at the Australian Open (damn you, Adidas shoes!) Andy Murray took Wimbledon. The first Brit in forever-and-a-day (70+ years if I’m not mistaken? I should probably just Google that…). Not only that, but unlike Djokovic, he actually runs. Djokovic just leans. Get it Murray. Can’t wait to see you at the Australian Open again this year. Be sure to get good shoes.
Best Girl To Leave Your Missus For
Gorgeous. Talented. Nuff said.
Best Bragging Rights
Leigh Montagna Scores 180+ During the Final Round of Dream Time
Joey was my POD this year, despite being told by multiple people that I made a poor choice (FYI: stats don’t lie). Not only did he only score below 100 twice the entire time I had him, but he pulled through in the DT finals for a ridiculous score and I won. Sorry about the bragging – it was my first year playing Dream Team and no one even noticed I won. Yes I’m tooting my own horn – what of it?
Best Reason to Stop Following NBA
Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett Leave the Boston Celtics
Probably the low point of my year. I don’t want to talk about because it actually pains my soul, but I will say this: Thank God I didn’t get that Paul Pierce tattoo back in ’08.
Best Sports Idol
Brian Lake, Hawthorn Hawks
We’ve talked about this before, briefly, but anyone who will take less money to reach their dream is an ace in my book (do Aussies use that expression?). Sacrifices to reach your dreams are universal and Brian Lake is a great person to look up to in that regard. Not like Buddy.
Best Finals Game
The Super Bowl, Baltimore Ravens def. San Francisco 49ers
There was a freakin’ black out! That already makes it Game Of The Decade but on top of that, the play was good, the score was close, it happened in New Orleans and The Blind Side subject Michael Oher won a Super Bowl ring. If that don’t pull on your heart strings than you have no heart (maybe, I don’t know you).
Best Excuse to Lose A Game
“The Roof Was Open” – Everyone Who Plays at the MCG
I can’t even believe that this is a thing. Why do so many people complain about the roof? You train outdoors. You play outdoors. All other stadiums are outdoors. Why is the MCG’s roof such a big deal?
Best Non-Sports Reason to Watch Sports
Super Bowl Half-Time Show – Especially Beyonce
There is no one who wins at life more than Beyonce. In fact, I suspect that if you look up ‘winning at life’ in the Urban Dictionary, the description will be of how Beyonce lives her life. That being said, how good is the Super Bowl half time show? I mean, especially when you compare it to other half time shows (that would be you, AFL – a wooden box on the field does not a show make). Who doesn’t want to see a good performance?

The Fresh Start
Let’s be honest… there is more than one league that could use a clean slate.
So happy new year. Make sure you make it a good one.
