Well known fact: every clubs has gaps. (not as well known: this is a short post. How lucky are you?)
Even if you have a great team, there’s ALWAYS something that can be improved upon. If you’re starting from scratch, you want to have your talent even distributed around the field. You don’t want to have a great midfield at the expense of your back line. You don’t want a great ruck men and no good kicks up front. Keep it even, folks, keep it even (in this case, the best defence is NOT a good offense).
A good starting point? Three great mid-fielders, 2 great forwards, 2 great defenders and 1 fabulous ruckmen.
From evaluating (and rating) your team, you know where your talent lies and where your clubs is lacking. List the areas of the field and put the names of your players (and their “scores”) in their areas. Identifying gaps: DONE.
From there, it depends on your strategy – defence or offense, clearances or marks – as to which areas you want to round out first and prioritize. But even if you have a preference, you still want to keep your talent even.
But you still need to consider a few things…
Depth – get back up. Even if they’re not great, they still need to be present. You can’t play a game when you’re a man down (that’s only possible in hockey and it rarely works out for those teams).
Multiple position players – Super nifty. But remember: yes, a great player who can play in more than one position is wonderful, but they can only play in one position at a time. Don’t count this player twice. He only plays one position.
Your Current Assets – You want the best of the best. Yes. I get it. But don’t forget to check what’s already available to you. What’s your feeder league got that you can check out? You can probably get a good guy for a bargain. If you can get a good guy for a good price, know where you can and need to spend the money.
Cost – Always. ALWAYS. Know how much it’s going to cost you. Know how much you’re willing to pay for top talent and if you can’t get them for that price, then you can’t have them – find someone else.
Okay. This was a long series. I’m tired. I need a nap.
And soon? I’ll tell you how to identify talent. How pumped are you?
