I have to start by admitting that I am not from Sydney. Not even close. Honestly, I’m not even from Australia. As a matter of fact, I’m an American (please try to mask your distaste – I’m from Hawaii, it’s BARELY America). When I first came to Australia in 2009, I fell in love with the Sydney Swans, much to the dismay of my boyfriend who bleeds North Melbourne’s blue and white. As my love for Sydney sports evolved, I wanted more than just the news I get on the league and team websites. But here’s the problem: I can’t find a Sydney sports blog anywhere.
Sure, the Swans have Bevos’ blog, written by Paul Bevan and GWS has ‘Talk to the Palm’ by Rhys Palmer. But those are more personal.
There’s Big Footy, but that’s news and forums, which I’m not looking for.
The Roar is pretty good, but there’s just too much. Information overload. Even the ‘Analysis and Opinion’ all the leagues have feels contrived to me. I’m sorry, but if you’re on the payroll, I don’t trust you (expecting some backlash for that comment at some point).
I’m want opinions. I want to laugh about something a commentator said or fight about whether the tribunal made the right call and listen to rants about why that team should draft that player and I want to do it with other people who feel the same way. I can get the news anywhere – I want the fun stuff. Since I can’t seem to find it anywhere (tsk tsk all you Sydney sports fans!) I’m going to have to do it myself.
Who I’ll Write About
AFL is my favorite, but as an American it feels wrong to ignore the ABL and the NBL. I do enjoy the occasional rugby game (go NSW Blues!) but there are too many teams for me to cover them properly. I won’t ignore them – if there’s a good story, it’ll be front and centre – but they won’t be the focus. Sorry, NRL fans! And I also have a feeling – a really good feeling – I’ll be league-bashing on occassion. They do some really stupid things. I have to complain about it, even if I am wrong.
What I’ll Write About
- Things I find funny
- Things that make me angry
- Players that I love
- Money (I studied Economics, so there’s no way I can get around this – it’s become a part of me)
How I’ll Write About It
Don’t expect me to be objective. Read the Sydney Morning Herald or watch the news for that. This will be a completely biased blog and I will rant and rave and laugh. But please, PLEASE feel free to challenge me. I yearn for it. Comment on posts. Email me. Tweet at me. Send me a carrier pigeon. I promise I will respond (if you sad something mean then don’t expect a nice response, but you will get a response).
When I’ll Write
I’m aiming for 3 times a week, at least. But we’ll see how it goes. I’m not a blogging machine, kiddies.
